I saw your Booktv InDepth interview. Without heading towards mania and grandiosity, your observations and views of the impact of current technology on the organization of people does cause me to find optimism. I'll actually try to read your book.
Do you ever come to the Midwest? What you see happening "community activism & grassroots activism" has been part of Indianapolis for at least 70 years. We have over 500 neighborhood associations, and our city government has been in the fore front of using GIS with its IMAGIS project, POLIS for history and data gathering and other organizations.
