The Ghost Map
The latest: the story of a terrifying outbreak of cholera in 1854 London 1854 that ended up changing the world. An idea book wrapped around a page-turner. I like to think of it as a sequel to Emergence if Emergence had been a disease thriller. You can see a trailer for the book here.
Everything Bad Is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter
The title says it all. This one sparked a slightly insane international conversation about the state of pop culture -- and particularly games. There were more than a few dissenters, but the response was more positive than I had expected. And it got me on The Daily Show, which made it all worthwhile.
Mind Wide Open : Your Brain and the Neuroscience of Everyday Life
My first best-seller, and the only book I've written in which I appear as a recurring character, subjecting myself to a battery of humiliating brain scans. The last chapter on Freud and the neuroscientific model of the mind is one of my personal favorites.
Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software
The story of bottom-up intelligence, from slime mold to Slashdot. Probably the most critically well-received all my books, and the one that has influenced the most eclectic mix of fields: political campaigns, web business models, urban planning, the war on terror.
Interface Culture : How New Technology Transforms the Way We Create and Communicate
My first. The book I wrote instead of finishing my dissertation. Still in print almost a decade later, and still relevant, I think. But I haven't read it in a while, so who knows what's in there!
This is great, Steven, but I wish the video gave some sense of what the cover of the book looks like. Couldn't we have just a peek?

IT IS VERY DIFFICULT CONCEPT TO UNDERSTAND. LET SEE THE VIDEO TO UNDERSTAND IT FULLY. THANKS FOR IDEA.

I just saw your book speech, and author's interview on CSPAN2'S booktv. I thought your tracing American History, back to the Founding Fathers, and their Friends, and their Inspirations, were very excellent. You have read the recent Newspaper and Magazine Articles, noting the connections of Abraham Lincoln and Charles Darwin, besides being born on the sames day, and both being Anti Slavery and Anti-Social Darwinism, before there was a Social Darwinism. Most anti Darwin Folks, are really Social Darwinists, who want to pretend to be otherwise, by attacking Charles Darwin, to direct attention away from any detailed evaluation of the origins of their true beliefs. I am now listing to Victor Navasky, speaking for the Memorial for Studs Terkel. I have never read Ida Tarbell, but because the subject family has done so much evil, since her time, that it seems almost Ancient History, but I need to read her as a necessary background to some of the most evil moments in American History. The most important book, of the past year, is Engineering Management Professor Barbara Oakley's book, "Evil Genes," which discuses the Genetic or DNA's basis of the Great Psychopaths: John D Rockefeller, Joseph Stalin, Mao, Adolph Hitler, Kim IL Sung, George H. Walker, Prescott Bush, etc. It is 6:42 Sunday Morning, and now Gary Younge, a Black Columnist for Guardian.uk. Aandre Schiffrin stated Studs was most proud on an interview of a Woman of a Settlement House: the Woman stated, "My God, I did not know that I believed That! Laura Flanders was the Master of Ceremonies. Now Dan Terkel is speaking, Studs' son. He was sitting in the Back ground; I was asking myself; does not that guy look like Studs Terkel, maybe it is Studs Terkel. I did not know Studs had a son. Dan stated: "Studs would never have had his long running Radio Program, had not 'Tail Gunner Joe McCarthy,' put him on the Blacklist." To a critic, Studs stated: "If it came out that the Communists were against Cancer; Would we then be For Cancer?"
I wish all these Interesting Interviews would end;
so I can go back to bed.
Studs died at 96, which my Uncle, mother's brother died in 2006; It should be a National Policy, to Institute Universal Medicaid/Medicare, with the Policy, that No American should Die, before His/ Her, 100Th Birthday; provided they did not smoke, nor drink City Tap Water, nor drink Alcohol, except
a little Muscadine /Concord Grape Wine. Now Stephen Kennedy is speaking; "He mentions that Abolitionist John Brown, once spoke there at Cooper Union NYC; I once passed there on the way to work, every morning. He lived about 60 miles North of My Home Town. Stephen Kennedy, stated back in the depression, everyone lived on Blue Plate Specials: 4 Veges + Cornbread, or Biscuits. I do not want to be Alarmist; but Now is a time for Alarm, like at the Start pf the Great Depression; today's younger Middle and Working Class, need to ask those of us who survived the Great depression, how we did it?n Now David Denby, author, "Snark" is on, claims that Snark, is the cause of American Society's Downfall. Good Book; Internet posts live forever on the Internet. Very Dark side of Internet. Now is a good time to turn booktv off. Defines Snark. Snark appeals to those who wish to spread Bad News. Snark is an easy way of seeming "smart." "Snark" functions as an enforcer of Mediocrity.

I see why "political science" is termed "political science" and not "politics." Thank you. I'm attending the NYPL event and pick up one of your books there.

I was wondering if you've done any talks or book readings in parts of the country that do not embrace science as much as Priestly, Franklin, and Jefferson... specifically communities that want to promote "intelligent design" or whatever they are calling it today.
It strikes me that your book and its insights might be better received than more aggressive assertions from the likes of "The God Delusion" by Sir Richard Dawkins. I'm a fan of Dawkins but you have to be in a certain frame of mind to be open to his arguments.
Improving science's image is so important to everything that is happening in the US right now. Especially as it relates to religious views and religious freedom. It seems like your book makes a softer, more palatable argument for how the founding fathers thought about science, religion, and government and how they could all co-exist. I hope your message is reaching more than the usual suspects.

Steve- just picked up the book today. 30 pages in I find it very enjoyable. I look forward to picking up your other books after I finish.
I was wondering on page 20 should the time period been late 1750s instead of "late 1850s?

The detailed info and biography of Charles Darwin is covered in the book "The genius of Charles Darwin" ( http://rapid4me.com/?q=The+Genius+of+Charles+Darwin ). It's very cognitive.

I just finished reading the book a few minutes ago. This was an amazingly well written story that weaves so many themes seamlessly together. You are an amazing writer with a tremendous vocabulary that is not typical of 21st century authors. It was similar to reading the classic writings of John Updike or Leonardo Sciascia. I love how you embrace the past but acknowledge the realities and situations of the present.
Your writing left me with a taste of how similar it was for the founding fathers to go through life and have doubts, in relation to our own modern day situations.
Awesome read!

Why is the sky blue? Why do people react favorably to mountain or sea air? How does desert air differ from the air of California's Central Valley? How is air pollution affecting plants and animals? This book is a unique guide to the air we breathe in California. More than a natural history guide, it approaches this fascinating topic by recognizing the overwhelming role played by humans in the story of California's air. In a highly engaging style, David Carle explains daily weather patterns, seasonal climate, characteristic winds, and sky phenomena. He explores air as the gases in our atmosphere, but also considers the aspects of air that influence all of our senses—its taste, smell, feel, and look. The guide discusses California's history of air quality management, air pollution and its effect on humans and the environment, and the technological and individual measures needed to address these challenges. The book also functions as a handbook for more environmentally conscious living by providing information on alternative energy sources for consumers and tips for cleaner running cars.
