Every year around this time I pick up a newspaper, scan the news, and announce loudly to anyone in earshot, "Damn! I can't believe I didn't win a MacArthur Genius Grant this year! What is wrong with those people?"
It's a joke, I swear, but this year I didn't even make it to the punchline, because the first name I saw in the Times story about this year's Geniuses is my old friend Alex Ross, whom I have known since seventh grade, and whose praises I have sung on this blog before. What a great call by the MacArthur folks. Go, Alex!
I'm sure it'll sound nitpicky, but it's not really a genius grant, you know (or a genius prize, or genius award, or any of the other genius phrases people commonly use for it). The MacArthur Foundation doesn't make any claim to be identifying geniuses in bestowing these fellowships; it's not about what the recipients are--it's more about what they do.
Still, I'm glad you mentioned Alex. I'm pleased for him, for the geriatrician (not because I know anything about her but because this is an increasingly important field), for the violinist and the sculptor and the astrophysicist, and, really, for all the recipients.

You think like I do. I am so happy for friends when good things happen to them, unlike a lot of people who resent them or are jealous. Bravo Steven. I hope your day with come because you deserve it! Loved your Ted Talk. In a way, just getting to talk at TED is its own little validation of your genius!

The online dating process works best if you are honest.Always exchange 3 emails before speaking on the phone. Ask questions that reveal more as the conversation progresses.
