Kind of like the plot structure of Memento. Past, Present, and Future threads all converge in the middle, at which point (and only until that point) all the holes are filled. Amazing, talented writing.

The "flashbacks" weren't just prominent in the first three seasons -- they are 50% of the structure of every episode. I can't understand why there would be "controversy" about that!

The next three seasons seems likely to be a complete inversion, structurally, of the first three. I don't think they will mix flashbacks and flashforwards, at least not in the way you seem to be imagining it -- rather, I think that all the off-island scenes will become the present, and all the on-island scenes will become the past: there will be no "flash forwards", and the scene in last night's film was not a "flash forward" either. It was a flash back, back to the island, triggered by Jack's regret of the day that he made that phone call to the ship.

Part of the reason why I characterize it this way, with the "flash forwards" as the present, is because "island time" has fallen behind our real-world time so greatly (I think they've only been on the island for a few months) that "a few years in the future" from last night's episode is actually "right now".

But mostly I predict that in the next three seasons the characters will interact with each other off-island and longer-arc plots will begin to emerge in the off-island world. The great mysteries of the characters' pasts which helped color the on-island dramatic milieu will, in the coming episodes, be transposed into the real-world off-island people "remembering" and peicing together (for us) the final hours/days/weeks on the island. This story will be told as flashbacks.

Ironically, the superficial structure of the show will not change from the formula: 50% on-island, 50% off-island.

Final prediction: The final episode of the final season will be the rescue itself.

I do suppose television shall yeld space and time to the new internet system called "poli"; many have to do that.

Did you ever wrote and read your metropolis?

Keep this, and use it:

I guessed that it was a flashforward almost immediately from the beginning, however, one piece of information during one of the 'flashforwards' threw me off. In one scene Jack is in the hospital being confronted by the other black doctor who suspects Jack is drunk. Jack then responds by saying he'll bring his dad from his office and see which one is more drunk....but wasn't his dad dead? That's when I second guessed it being a flash-back, but the ending of the episode confirmed the flash-forward...now we're left with that plot whole that confuses the heck out of me.

Guess Who?

I hope that all the questions concerning events in the character past will be answered in the next 2 seasons as well as all the questions about the island and, that at the end of the 5th series they will be rescued.I feel the final series should reveal each character's future. This is my hopes for the finale three seasons of such a great series. Are you all with me????!

    • I'm a father of three boys, husband of one wife, and author of seven books, and co-founder of three web sites. We spend most of the year in Marin County, California though I'm on the road a lot giving talks. (You can see the full story here.) Personal correspondence should go to sbeej at earthlink dot net. My Books

    • : Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation

Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation
An exploration of environments that lead to breakthrough innovation, in science, technology, business, and the arts. I conceived it as the closing book in a trilogy on innovative thinking, after Ghost Map and Invention. But in a way, it completes an investigation that runs through all the books. Sold more copies in hardcover than anything else I've written.

    • : The Invention of Air

      The Invention of Air
The story of the British radical chemist Joseph Priestley, who ended up having a Zelig-like role in the American Revolution. My version of a founding fathers book, and a reminder that most of the Enlightenment was driven by open source ideals.

    • : The Ghost Map

      The Ghost Map
The latest: the story of a terrifying outbreak of cholera in 1854 London 1854 that ended up changing the world. An idea book wrapped around a page-turner. I like to think of it as a sequel to Emergence if Emergence had been a disease thriller. You can see a trailer for the book here.

    • : Everything Bad Is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter

Everything Bad Is Good for You: How Today's Popular Culture Is Actually Making Us Smarter
The title says it all. This one sparked a slightly insane international conversation about the state of pop culture -- and particularly games. There were more than a few dissenters, but the response was more positive than I had expected. And it got me on The Daily Show, which made it all worthwhile.

    • : Mind Wide Open : Your Brain and the Neuroscience of Everyday Life

Mind Wide Open : Your Brain and the Neuroscience of Everyday Life
My first best-seller, and the only book I've written in which I appear as a recurring character, subjecting myself to a battery of humiliating brain scans. The last chapter on Freud and the neuroscientific model of the mind is one of my personal favorites.

    • : Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software

Emergence: The Connected Lives of Ants, Brains, Cities, and Software
The story of bottom-up intelligence, from slime mold to Slashdot. Probably the most critically well-received all my books, and the one that has influenced the most eclectic mix of fields: political campaigns, web business models, urban planning, the war on terror.

    • : Interface Culture : How New Technology Transforms the Way We Create and Communicate

Interface Culture : How New Technology Transforms the Way We Create and Communicate
My first. The book I wrote instead of finishing my dissertation. Still in print almost a decade later, and still relevant, I think. But I haven't read it in a while, so who knows what's in there!
