Gmail Weirdness
I'm getting mail bounced back that I sent from my Gmail account, with this error message:
Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: SMTP Error (state 9): 553-mail rejected because your IP is in DUL. See 553 http://www.mail-abuse.com/enduserinfo.html
Forgive my ignorance, but which IP is in trouble here -- my ISP's or Gmail's? And what can I do? Help?
You either have a virus that is spamming without your knowledge.
or your ISP's SMTP servers have been put on the DUL list, either by accident or careless administration.
Use google's smtp server instead since you have a gmail

If you're simply using Gmail's default web-based setup, it's almost certainly Gmail's issue -- one or more of Google's outgoing mail servers got caught in the DUL (the MAPS "dial up list"). That sounds seriously incorrect (i.e. an error on MAPS part, since Google -- to my knowledge -- has no dialups).
I just sent mail from my gmail account to another account and verified that my source IP (the IP address from which I was accessing www.gmail.com) is not in the email anywhere, so your ISP is entirely out of the loop in this one.
I'd be happy to trace it further if you would give me more info -- or the full bounce. (Can you see my email address in your comment stream?)

Actually, GMail has a longstanding problem with spam blocking services blocking one or more of its servers at a time, as I found out to my dismay last year. If you search, for example, on "GMail spamcop" or "GMail blacklist", you'll find articles like these:

I'd suggest contacting GMail with the details of your error message, and also letting your intended recipient know (via a different email account) what happened and ask them to contact their incoming mail ISP.

you also might want to try checking your IP address here... if it's listed, you can ask for it to be removed.
