A few items for you to put on the calendar:
First, Boston-area folks can come by and see a free talk I'm doing for the wonderful Berkman Center at Harvard. It'll be on the general theme of the new book -- the intelligence of today's popular culture -- but with a slightly stronger emphasis on the internet part of the book. It takes place Thursday the 28th at 7PM, in the Langdell North Classroom, which is part of the Langdell Law Library. In the coming days, I'll have more details for you about the book tour, which starts in earnest two weeks from now.
Secondly, the hilarious show Boozy that I wrote about a while back has come back for a return engagement; those of you who have always hankered for a mock-musical about urban planning and the life of Robert Moses should run, not walk, to the 45 Bleecker Street theater, where it will be playing from May 1 to May 28.
Finally, you might want to pick up a copy of the NY Times Magazine this weekend...

I' m a german student and have read about your theses concerning the effects of new media in a newspaper.
It' s a topic one can't imagine in Europe in this form actually. It depends on every person what reading can be or playing computer games may effect.
There are so many simple faults of thinking in this discussion, astonishing that people are taking it as scienctly.
Even as a satiric scenario it doesnt' work.
Good literature (not mass books) have no linear plot but among other things different levels of sense. Action is not so important, but 'Bildung' and the ability to build up relations, abstract thinking and phantasy-take an old book -'A la rechereche du temps perdu' from Marcel Proust or more from today: The pendulum of Focoult. You have to decode, to understand, to know ,to learn to read behind the lines and so on.I recently heard in a store for computer games a conservation between kids about Ecos book. One said he gave up, another said it would be a bigger challenge than every actual game but he would stayed tuned to it).So let hear what intelligent kids are sayin about it.
Of cours it's not mind candy but demanding if you read a challenging fastidious book:You have to t h i n k. It's more than only concentration. It' s an active attitude, there start processes in your brain that the author is not giving in the plot.Kids become a personality by the 'different discurses'.
Unfortunately my English is not goog enough to go more into detail(sorry no time for translation working in the moment).
I' ve grown up with computer games, videos and tv
and in Europe the cultural level of these media is p a r t l y not so bad as p a r t l y in the US (were I stayed for some time).
I've always tried to show friends (which are also familiar with these media, but not convinced of positive sides) the positive effects which games, some tv formats (espec. docus) and internet can have (but this depends as I said on the people, the way they use it and the capacaties, they have).Of course some computer games can train your strategic abilities for example; you can learn a lot of good docus on tv and in internet you can find much information, but unfortunately it's until now mostly on a very low level. On the other hand you are actually lead by programs, decisions are even in very intelligent games limited (and still not so complex as the possible associations in brain during reading difficult books, but it depends on the reader what the book may effect and wich neurophysiological effects can be established)
See also Frederic Vester and the last book of Gerhard Roth).
But the most kids are (except on LAN partys) isolated in this virtual world in which they not learn was life actually and really is,they are loosing the competence to express theirselves adaequatly. Many kids only want to play ego shooters and car races with only few interactive elements;they are with 18 or so often lowdimensional and infantile or immature, not autonome people with own thoughts and values and intellectual capacities, they always reacted on sensations for their senses primarily.
In spite of this I do not think Manfred Spitzner(neurophysiological professor at the unuiversity of Ulm)is right. He had shown scientifically he postulates)that internet, computer games and tv decreases drastically the IQ level_ it depends on how one handles these media (and the parents).
I enjoyed yor articles and I think some points are important to prevent the typical stereotypes about the new media by conservative people.
cheers
