Here Comes The Sun

I meant to post a note about this last week, but it was too busy with all the pre-holiday family insanity. But here it is, a few days late:

HAPPY SOLSTICE!

I like the holiday season as much as the next guy, for purely sentimental reasons, and having a two-year-old boy certainly makes everything seem a little more magical than it has since I was a kid myself. But the real landmark for me this time of year is the Winter Solstice. Not for new agey reasons, of course -- just because it's a guarantee that, no matter how brutal the rest of the winter turns out to be, there's going to be a little more sunlight with each passing day. I've often thought that the only thing that keeps Northeast winters from being intolerably brutal is the fact that the shortest day of the year comes at the very beginning. If it kept getting darker all the way until February, I think I'd move to Los Angeles. So do your pagan dances or pray to the sun god or whatever else you want to do -- it's only going to be brighter from here on out!

I, too, look forward to December 21 for the very same reason. It's as short as it gets.

Every year I celebrate my Personal Equinox Day. This is when the sun is both up when I leave for work and when I walk out of the subway at the end of the day. Usually, it falls sometime in mid to late February. This is really the time I celebrate.

According to this Washington Post article, the winter solstice isn't just on one day, but runs from about December 2 to January 4. The earliest sunset took place on December 2 when it set at 4:46 here in DC. The sunset continued to set at 4:46 for 10 days when, on Dec 13 it set one minute later. Conversely, the latest sunrise (7:27 in DC) will take place on January 4.

BTW, according to http://timeanddate.com, on December 21, LA gets 9:53 hours of sunlight, NYC, 9:15, and DC 9:26. I guess every bit helps.

We celebrate the solstice in my family as THE major event in the year. My brother was married on the solstice a few years back, and he and his wife plant trees for their two boys every year in celebration. I don't know if you're familiar with a group called the Christmas Revels. It's a non-profit organization that celebrates the cycle of the rebirth of life, most specifically through performances in December all around the US that celebrate the solstice through different cultures (Celtic, Northlands, Italian Renaissance, Roma songs, dances and traditions among many other yearly themes). I was a performer in the Washington DC Revels many times and there is an amazing poem that is read at the end of every show. It was written by Susan Cooper, author of the Dark is Rising series (fantastic young adult books). It's called The Shortest Day. Hope you enjoy.

The cool thing too is how the birds register the lengthening days...I think this is done in the hypothalmus if I remember correctly. Beginning in early to mid-January, you'll start hearing chickadees singing their two-note song, and then it's the cardinals, the housefinches, and the mourning doves. Their songs are all triggered by daylength.
